Clinical social worker receives 2024 Presidential Award
On Wednesday, April 17, Carol Sherman, LCSW, senior licensed clinical social worker, was honored at the 2024 Presidential Excellence Awards as a prestigious Presidential Staff Excellence in Service winner. This award recognizes Sherman’s exceptional dedication, commitment and outstanding performance in her role at the Mays Cancer Center.
The Presidential Staff Excellence in Service Award honors staff who have made noteworthy and distinctive contributions to UT Health San Antonio by modeling our core values and serving our education, research, patient care and community engagement missions.
Sherman brings a wealth of experience to her role as an oncology social worker. Her career spans over twenty years in hospice and palliative care, counseling, home health, skilled rehabilitation and medical laboratory technology. Her expertise and compassion shine through as she collaborates with the dedicated Patient and Family Services team to support patients, families and caregivers by providing counseling, emotional support and helping people access resources such as support groups, home care and transportation.
“Carol Sherman is the primary social worker for radiation oncology at the Mays Cancer Center. When she learned about a patient at risk of being evicted, which would have subsequently stopped treatment for her head and neck cancer, Ms. Sherman dropped everything to help this patient and her family,” said Leslie Villarreal, RN, nurse navigator and case manager. “She spent more than an hour on the phone going over the next steps and determining how to help. Showing comfort and empathy, she contacted everyone involved in the eviction process to address housing and legal issues while ensuring treatment continued.”
Sherman's dedication and excellence embody the spirit of service and commitment that defines the Mays Cancer Center’s mission to decrease the burden of cancer in our communities.
