AYA COPE
The adolescent and young adult (AYA) COPE team is reaching teens and young adults throughout the South Texas region to improve cancer care, quality of life, and outcomes for these patients and link them to resources specific to their unique needs.
We aim to identify challenges in caring for, referring or accessing services for adolescents and young adults with cancer, including access to clinical trials and supportive care. As we continue to develop AYA-specific services for our community, we strive to ensure their care is aligned with the requirements identified by local providers and the AYA population.
Multidisciplinary Adolescent and Young Adult Care
Adolescents and young adults who are undergoing treatment in the hospital are partnered with an AYA-dedicated social worker and nurse navigator, thanks to a grant awarded by Teen Cancer America. They are here to help you with all of your questions and life concerns beyond your medical care.
Teen Cancer America AYA Lounge
We have designated an inpatient space at University Health for all AYAs to relax and hang out while undergoing their treatment. Our Teen Cancer AYA Lounge has a designated reading nook, free coffee, video games and more.
Program Co-Directors
The AYA Cancer Program is a partnership between pediatric and adult oncology in a co-leadership model led by Elizabeth Bowhay-Carnes, MD, a hematology oncologist at Mays Cancer Center and Allison Grimes, MD, a pediatric oncologist at University Health and assistant professor of pediatrics at UT Health San Antonio.
