    About Richard Tuli, MD, PhD

Richard Tuli, MD, PhD, is professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Long School of Medicine at UT San Antonio, director of the oncology service line at Mays Cancer Center and associate chief medical officer of the Multispecialty and Research Hospital.

He is a board-certified radiation oncologist who specializes in the research and treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Tuli previously served as professor and chair of radiation oncology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and as deputy director and assistant vice president of strategic partnerships at the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute. In those roles, he led significant growth and development of cancer programs, expanding the faculty nearly tenfold and building a department that integrated research and clinical care. He developed specialized programs spanning brachytherapy to radiopharmaceuticals and established partnerships with community and national centers to expand access to care, including a joint venture with Mass General Brigham to open the first academic radiation oncology center in Palm Beach, Florida. These efforts contributed to substantial increases in departmental productivity and were recognized by national accrediting organizations, including the Commission on Cancer, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s APEx accreditation program.

His research focuses on integrating molecularly targeted therapies with advanced radiation technologies for the treatment of pancreatic, rectal and other gastrointestinal cancers. He has served as a sponsor-investigator on early-phase clinical trials regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and as national principal investigator for cooperative group and industry-sponsored studies in gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Tuli is an active member of gastrointestinal cancer committees within the National Clinical Trials Network and has served as a gastrointestinal liaison to the Developmental Therapeutics Committee of NRG Oncology, a member of the National Cancer Institute Pancreas Task Force and a board member of the National Cancer Institute’s Central Institutional Review Board for early-phase research. He also serves on national data and safety monitoring boards.

He has authored more than 150 articles, editorials and book chapters in journals including Nature Communications, JAMA Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Scientific Reports and Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology. He is a longstanding examiner for the American Board of Radiology, reflecting his commitment to education and training.
