Modesta Garcia-Atwater, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ACHPN

Modesta “Mo” Garcia-Atwater, DNP, FNP-BC, is a family nurse practitioner specializing in hospice and palliative care within the Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Her primary focus is providing compassionate, comprehensive care to patients and families facing serious illness.

In addition to her clinical work, Mo is actively engaged in clinical leadership and education. She educates and precepts nursing students at all levels of practice and plays a key role in developing and supporting interdisciplinary palliative care teams. Her expertise also includes wound care in complex patient populations.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Incarnate Word College in 1993. Her early career as a registered nurse included experience in medical-surgical nursing, home health and women’s health. While working as a labor and delivery nurse at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital, she pursued graduate education at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, earning a Master of Science in Nursing with a minor in nursing education in 2004.

As a family nurse practitioner, her professional experience has spanned community health, private primary care practice and clinical leadership roles. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2013, achieving the highest level of clinical training and further solidifying her expertise in hospice and palliative care.
