Melissa Frei–Jones, M.D.

During medical training, Dr. Frei-Jones focused on classical hematology and sickle cell disease in both her research and clinical activities. She joined the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio in 2009 and has continued to practice primarily as a pediatric hematologist. She has served as the medical director of the pediatric sickle cell program at UT Health San Antonio since 2012 and the South Texas Hemophilia Treatment Center director since 2015. She is involved in both medical education and training as the child health discipline coordinator in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio and the Pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship program director. Additionally, she advocates for patients on a state level as a member of the Texas DSHS Newborn Screening Advisory Committee and the Sickle Cell Task Force.

Dr. Frei-Jones was also named one of San Antonio’s Top Doctors 2021.
