About Matheus Franco, MD, PhD, MS, MBA
Matheus Franco, MD, is an associate professor in the Department of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is an advanced endoscopist and the director of endoscopy at UT Health San Antonio’s Multispecialty and Research Hospital (MSRH). Dr. Franco specializes in the early detection and staging of gastrointestinal cancers, offering minimally invasive treatment through advanced techniques such as endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). He is also skilled in managing symptoms of patients with advanced oncologic disease through interventional endoscopic procedures including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and enteral stenting.
Dr. Franco completed his training in internal medicine and gastroenterology, followed by a dedicated year of advanced endoscopy training in gastrointestinal oncology at São Paulo Hospital. He then pursued a second year of advanced endoscopy training at the Cleveland Clinic, refining his skills in complex and innovative therapeutic procedures. He has further enriched his expertise through international visiting programs at leading institutions such as the National Cancer Center.
Dr. Franco has focused his work on minimally invasive techniques that improve both curative and palliative outcomes in gastrointestinal diseases. His clinical work is complemented by a strong commitment to education and research. He holds a PhD in gastroenterology and master’s degrees in technology and business administration.
