Kai He, MD, PhD

Kai He, MD, PhD, is a thoracic medical oncologist specializing in lung and other thoracic cancers, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancers, thymic cancers, mediastinal tumors and pleural malignancies. He provides personalized treatment using targeted therapies, immunotherapies, cellular therapies and clinical trials based on each patient’s cancer and individual needs.

Dr. He is a professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine, at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at the University of Texas at San Antonio. At Mays Cancer Center, he leads the Thoracic Oncology Program and serves as co-director of the Cell Therapy Research Center. His work focuses on developing new treatments for thoracic cancers and other solid tumors, including tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy and CAR T-cell therapies.

Dr. He earned his premedical degree from Peking University and his medical degree from Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, followed by a PhD in cell biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his internal medicine residency through the Hofstra NSLIJ Residency Program at the Zucker School of Medicine in New York and his medical oncology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he later served as an attending physician.

He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research, International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, European Society for Medical Oncology and Chinese American Hematologist and Oncologist Network.
