About Jason Gauthier, MD
Jason Gauthier, MD, is an assistant professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a thoracic surgeon at UT Health San Antonio who specializes in lung, airway, esophagus, stomach, chest wall and mediastinum surgery. He has particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery, lung, and esophageal cancer, benign esophageal disorders and lung transplantation.
Gauthier was mentored by the nation’s leaders in thoracic surgery and lung transplantation at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis during his general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. He also completed an NIH-funded research fellowship investigating pathways of rejection and tolerance following heart and lung transplantation. Gauthier received advanced training in robotic surgery through The American Association for Thoracic Surgery’s Thoracic Surgical Robotics Fellowship.
He values the patient-centered approach to medical care. His primary goal is to partner with each patient to achieve the ideal outcome, taking into consideration their desires and specific health needs. Often this is done in a multidisciplinary manner in collaboration with a team of specialists. Additionally, Gauthier performs minimally invasive techniques whenever possible, including robotic-assisted surgery, which may improve recovery times, provide minimal scarring and shorten hospital stays.
