About Georgios Fotopoulos, MD, PhD, FSMB
Dr. Fotopoulos is an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He specializes in thoracic oncology and experimental therapeutics.
He earned his medical degree from Athens Medical School in 2004. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Evangelismos General Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Ioannina in 2015. He received the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification in 2012 and board certification from the European Society for Medical Oncology in 2014.
Dr. Fotopoulos began his academic career as a non-tenure instructor at Athens Medical School, focusing on lung cancer, breast cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. In 2017, he moved to Texas for a fellowship in advanced oncology drug development at UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he contributed to early-phase clinical trials of targeted and innovative cancer therapies. From 2019 to 2025, he served as a national leader in lung and urogenital cancers at the largest cancer institution in Cyprus before returning to the United States.
He holds a doctorate on the role of the androgen receptor in breast cancer and has authored 19 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He also translated and edited the Greek edition of the MD Anderson Manual of Oncology. Dr. Fotopoulos is a member of ASCO, AACR, ESMO, HESMO, HeCOG and the NCI.
His mission is to advance care for patients with thoracic malignancies and expand access to cutting-edge therapies through early-phase clinical trials.
