Georg Aue, MD, PhD, MBA

Georg Aue, MD, PhD, MBA, is a professor of medicine and the Daisy M. Skinner Endowed Chair in Cancer Immunology at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT San Antonio. He serves as chief of the Section of Cellular Therapies at the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio and inaugural director of the Mary and Bill Henrich Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Unit at the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital.

Dr. Aue is a physician-scientist and blood cancer specialist with more than two decades of experience caring for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, bone marrow failure and other serious blood disorders. He specializes in blood and bone marrow transplantation, stem cell transplantation, cellular therapy, immunotherapy and clinical trials that bring new treatments from the laboratory to patients.

Before joining the Mays Cancer Center, Dr. Aue spent more than 20 years at the National Institutes of Health, where he led clinical research and cared for patients with complex and high-risk blood disorders. At the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, he served as acting clinical director and deputy clinical director, helping oversee a large portfolio of clinical trials and research programs. He also led efforts to improve the safety, quality and efficiency of clinical research and strengthen collaboration among clinical and research teams.

Dr. Aue’s research focuses on chronic lymphocytic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, severe aplastic anemia and other bone marrow failure disorders. He studies how the immune system recovers after transplantation and how transplant and cellular therapies can be made safer and more effective. He also has extensive experience developing and leading early-stage and first-in-human clinical trials that translate laboratory discoveries into new approaches to preventing, diagnosing and treating blood cancers and bone marrow disorders.

At the Mays Cancer Center and the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital, Dr. Aue contributes to the development of comprehensive transplant and cellular therapy programs for patients with complex hematologic conditions. His clinical and research interests include leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes, aplastic anemia, blood and bone marrow transplantation, stem cell transplantation, cellular therapy, immunotherapy and immune system recovery after transplantation. He works closely with patients, families, referring physicians and multidisciplinary care teams to determine whether standard therapy, a clinical trial, immunotherapy, cellular therapy or a blood or bone marrow transplant may be appropriate for each patient.
