Frosts' gift through estate helps ensure bright future for cancer patients

The Frosts said they wanted to ensure the UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center would thrive in their city for future generations. And was one of the reasons the couple decided to make a gift through their estate to support the cancer center.

“It was just another way for us to take care of our own future and personal financial goals and at the same time provide continued support to the cancer center and the many patients it serves,” Pat Frost said. “It’s never too early to begin planning for your future.”

Pat Frost, 54, is the great, great-grandson of Col. T.C. “Tom” Frost who founded Frost Bank in San Antonio in 1868. “We’ve been proud to serve as the official bank of the cancer center since 1974,” Pat Frost said. “So I’ve been aware of its positive impact on cancer health care and research in our city for many years. Kelley and I wanted to become more involved in with the cancer center because we saw how good it was and how great it could become for the future of our city.”

Pat Frost joined the Frost family banking business in 1984, and in 1993 was promoted to bank president.

In 1999 he and his wife were asked to serve on the Board of Governors for the cancer center, and they enthusiastically agreed. Why?

“We are blessed to have the Cancer Center, one of the premier centers in the world for cancer research and care, right here in San Antonio,” Pat Frost said. “When San Antonians are stricken with cancer, they can come to the UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center for excellent care instead of having to travel to places like Houston or Dallas or outside of Texas.”

Pat Frost is the past chair of the Board of Governors, which is a group of individuals from San Antonio and South Texas who devote their time, talent and resources to promote the mission of the center through philanthropy, community outreach, education and public relations. They serve as community ambassadors for the center.

The cancer center has the preeminent National Cancer Institute designation and is one of only four such centers in Texas.

“That speaks volumes about the Cancer Center’s and UT Health San Antonio’s outstanding leadership and their reputation,” Pat Frost said. “We realized that an estate plan to the Cancer Center can make a difference in both our own family members’ lives, in so many friends’ and patients’ lives and in their family’s lives as well. This effect is the legacy we hope our gift will accomplish and we hope it will encourage others to make the same kind of gift.”
